The Moral of the Story (graph)

The StoryGraph

Let me tell you about my new love, Storygraph. "Alexa play Love story by Taylor Swift"

The Storygraph is an amazing website and app that lets you track your reads, curate a TBR list, and provide statistics based on what you read.

And I really love Storygraph not only because it's a female-owned company (💪) but because it allows you to give half-star ratings! I think the statistics and reviews that Storygraph offers are just so interesting and far more helpful when it comes to choosing a new read or items for a book list.

The Brochure

Needless to say. I love Storygraph so much that creating a brochure was like second nature. I might add that it was also second nature to create a brochure on Canva.

I always joke at work that I spend most of my day making stuff on Canva. As I mentioned in a previous post, I hate things that look boring. If it looks like you made it in Word or MS Paint, it makes the little creative goblin in me cry.

For the most part, I like to start with a blank Canva page. But when working on a project like this one, I find it's best to start with a template. Finding templates on Canva is like that HGTV show, Good Bones. You have to ask yourself, does this template have good bones? Can I renovate this template into what I need? For this project, that meant, does this template have space for photos and text? Does this template have a tidy aesthetic with complementary colors?

The Colors were what I particularly liked about this one. Blue and Orange are complementary colors, as are Purple and Yellow. The blues and purples give it a calm, easy-to-process look, while the orange and yellow really punch it up to draw your attention. Color theory is one thing that you should always keep in mind, whether you're creating a brochure or planning a wedding.

As far as text goes, I don't think you can ever really go wrong with bold headings followed by sans serif text. It keeps your work looking nice and tidy. The purpose of a brochure is to inform, obviously. So you don't want something that looks messy or like there's just too much going on.

Overall, I had a great time playing around with brochures and talking about Storygraph. But let me know what you think.

And follow me on Storygraph so the goblin can finally have friends! I'm @mcwoj

  1. Hi Marissa, I enjoyed the aesthetic of your brochure. The text is easy to read and well-balanced with the graphics. I thought the colors also worked well- as an artist, I appreciated how you used color theory to highlight the information about this resource. The brochure is well geared towards a general audience and would do great in a display. Lastly, I like how you added relevant data for this resource so the audience could get more background.
