PUZZLERS!.... Assemble

I totally LOCKED IN for this one, guys. First things first, my dad's side of the family never let us play video games or watch movies when we were over. This meant we had to entertain ourselves with board games and brain teasers. So I blame them for my insane love for puzzles and escape rooms. (Shout out, Grandma!) So this assignment was definitely a *knuckle crack* "let's do this" moment.

Second things second, I had to pick a topic that I knew enough about to make my own puzzle. And because I just saw the new Fantastic Four movie and I'm also currently and forever in love with Johnny Storm (😍), a Marvel Cinematic Universe breakout was the way to go!

The puzzle I decided to make from scratch was a Name Logic Puzzle. These puzzles are so fun. If any of you are interested in finding online versions of these puzzles, I suggest you go to sporcle.com It's a website dedicated to multiple types of quizzes and puzzles. I can spend HOURS on there.

Below is my finished Logic Puzzle. The word bank is on the second slide. I had a lot of fun creating this puzzle. I even printed it out and made my brother do it, so I could see what I needed to tweak. I think this was a super important step in the process. I recommend trying your puzzles out on staff members or family members to test them. When I was creating it, I thought that maybe I was making it too easy. But my brother (who knows more about the MCU than I do) was actually struggling a little. It just goes to show that sometimes you need another set of eyes to help you. We found a few clues that I needed to change the wording of or change altogether.

There's two main things that make creating a break-out difficult. Number one is that you also have to be an expert on your topic to create a break-out from scratch. Number two is that you have to sort of think backwards. You have to say, "okay, I need four locks on my lock box. Now, how are they going to find the combinations?" It's sort of a brain teaser in and of itself.

I also had a hard time thinking of what the prize inside the box could be. I liked the idea of tickets to go see an MCU movie in theaters. I don't know if that's really feasible. I think it would be a great activity to do leading up to the premiere of a big MCU movie. Luckily for us, there's always a new one on the horizon. But merch/toys/snacks are always a viable prize option. But it's kind of on the predictable/boring side.

What have been some of your favorite prize options? And were you able to solve my MCU logic puzzle? I'll give you a hint- start with square 1A.

  1. Hi Marissa,
I love your idea for a Marvel breakout room! As a Marvel fan myself, I truly wish I thought of something like this. While I tend to gear myself more towards adults programming, this is something that could truly work for all ages, especially younger adults. Your story to go with your breakout is extremely well planned and I find myself wishing I was as creative as you proved yourself to be with this assignment. I did find your puzzle a little difficult and definitely struggled with a few, but at the end of the day that is part of what makes it fun!
